ROORKEE: An MBA second-year student at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Roorkee went missing on Wednesday evening after reportedly slipping into the Gangnahar canal, police said.
Ashish Shukla, 30, a resident of Gokulnagar in Varanasi, had gone to the Ganga canal near the Nagar Nigam bridge with a group of friends at around 7 pm. According to preliminary reports, he was standing near the edge when he lost his balance and fell into the fast-flowing water.

His friends immediately raised the alarm and attempted to rescue him, but he was swept away by the strong current before help could arrive.
A large number of locals gathered at the scene soon after the incident. Senior Sub-Inspector Manoj Gairola of the Civil Lines police station conducted a preliminary inquiry and recorded statements from eyewitnesses.
Police said a team from the Jal Police, along with divers, has been deployed to search for the missing student.
